At the 37th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, hosted by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the newsroom took home the top prize in the Regional News Story: Investigative Reporting category (NATAS).

KNXV took home the award for its multi-part investigative series “Arizona’s Dental Dangers,” which exposed a flaw in the system that was designed to safeguard Arizonans from dentists with criminal records.

Despite serial negligence, criminal arrests, permanent patient damage, and even fatalities, the station’s year-long investigation revealed a concealed disciplinary structure that permitted dentist after dentist to preserve their state licenses.

The work of KNXV Investigative Reporter Dave Biscobing drew the attention of Arizona lawmakers, who created a much more transparent system mandating any disciplinary action against dentists to be displayed online for customers to see. They also require a thorough background investigation before granting a dental license.
