From January 2, 2018, to June 26, 2020, he was the host of The Will Cain Show on ESPN Radio. Since March 2015, he has been a contributor for ESPN, working with the features unit and E:60, as well as appearing on First Take. Cain returned to the Dallas area when his father died in 2001 to assist with the care of his younger brother. Cain bought two community newspapers in Texas and launched others before selling them to Stephens Media, the Las Vegas Review publisher. Journal Cain launched Quince Media in 2006, which publishes a quinceanera magazine, website, and expos.

From February 28, 2011, through August 5, 2011, Cain worked as a fill-in host for CNN’s In the Arena, where he co-hosted the show alongside E. D. Hill.

Cain was a conservative voice on ESPN, despite the fact that his show was largely about sports. In 2018, Cain told the Washington Post, “Is it true that being conservative has aided me throughout my time here? Yes, of course.
