Prior to being recruited by the Knicks, he began broadcasting after being let go by the Hawks, working for USA Network’s coverage of the NBA, including playoff games. Hubie continued to coach the Knicks—who were not in the playoffs—alongside Brent Musburger in the 1985 NBA playoffs, lending his skills to CBS once more. Following his firing from the Knicks, CBS recruited him full-time in December 1986 as a broadcaster. He partnered with Verne Lundquist as the third team during a few regular season and postseason games before being elevated to the second team the following year.

When asked in 1988 how long he planned to continue playing basketball, Hubie replied, “I will keep playing in some manner until the day Verne Lundquist dies.” To replace Billy Cunningham as its lead analyst with play-by-play broadcaster Dick Stockton, CBS named Hubie in 1988. He worked on the local broadcasts for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Detroit Pistons before joining TNT in the early 1990s.
