McCrary began his acting career on K.C. Undercover in 2015 at the age of eight, appearing in two episodes. He made a cameo on Childish Gambino’s song “Terrified” in December 2016. Later, he gave live performances of “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 on Little Big Shots, “Who’s Lovin’ You” on The Ellen Show, and “Terrified” by Childish Gambino at the 60th Grammy Awards. Following a go-viral singing performance a few weeks earlier, he performed the national anthem before a Los Angeles Clippers game in December 2017. He later made cameo appearances in 2017 on Teachers and I’m Dying Up Here.
He released his debut single, “Inviting All of You,” on January 14, 2018. JD McCrary signed with Disney Music Group’s Hollywood Records on August 13, 2018, and on August 28, he released the music video for his second single, “My Name,” making him the label’s youngest artist ever. In 2019 McCrary co-starred in the comedy Little from Universal and voiced young Simba in the live-action version of The Lion King from Disney.
