The native Chicagoan grew up in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and graduated from Stevenson High School. A year after graduating from the University of Missouri, he was hired as sports director of campus television station MUTV and spent several years at NBC affiliate KOMU-TV, owned and operated by the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia.

His broadcasting career began when, at the age of 14, he began calling football games for his high school radio station WAES-FM in rural Chicago. Those formative years spent working in radio and writing for his high school newspaper shaped his interest in news reporting and led him to the prestigious University of Missouri School of Journalism where he earned his master’s degree.
His television career took off while he was still a student at Mizzou. He first honed his skills as MUTV’s games chief before working at NBC’s Mid-Missouri affiliate, KOMU-TV. He worked in every part of the newsroom at KOMU, from announcing and mooring to web production and driving the live truck.
While in Memphis, Tenn., working for WMC-offshoot TV’s NBC affiliate as a sight and sound columnist led him to move to New York City. For the next year, after thriving in Memphis, he relocated north, taking over as CBS station KFVS-end-of-week TV’s sports wrestler and columnist and facilitating a Saturday morning games talk radio show on SEMO ESPN Radio.
