Waller began her career in broadcast news as a production assistant at the KNBC Documentary Unit in 1971. Her desire to work on breaking news prompted her to learn the skills required to become a sound technician. Waller was one of the first women admitted to the IATSE #695 union, which represents sound technicians. She worked as a freelancer for the three main US networks, including CBS News, 60 Minutes, and CBS Reports.

Waller shifted her career focus from the technical to the editorial side of TV news in 1982. KCOP, Channel 13, in Los Angeles, recruited her as an assignment editor.
