Waller began her career in broadcast news as a production assistant at the KNBC Documentary Unit in 1971. Her desire to work on breaking news prompted her to learn the skills required to become a sound technician. Waller was one of the first women admitted to the IATSE #695 union, which represents sound technicians. She worked as a freelancer for the three main US networks, including CBS News, 60 Minutes, and CBS Reports.
