Who Was Mike Nichols?

Mike Nichols was an American film and theater director, producer, actor, and comedian. He was praised for his versatility in the job he did as well as his talent for bringing out the best in actors of all levels of expertise. He is one of only 18 individuals to have received the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards in the main American entertainment categories (EGOT).

On November 6, 1931, in Berlin, Germany, Michael Igor Peschkowsky was given the name Nichols. He was the son of Brigitte (née Landauer) and the doctor Pavel Peschkowsky.  His father was born to a Russian-Jewish immigrant family in Vienna, Austria. After leaving Siberia after the Russian Revolution and relocating to Germany around 1920, the rich family of Nichols’ father had previously lived there.

Nichols’s mother’s family were German Jews. His maternal grandparents were Gustav Landauer, a leading theorist of anarchism, and author Hedwig Lachmann. Through his mother, Nichols was a third cousin twice removed by scientist Albert Einstein.

Thirteen days after his 83rd birthday, on November 19, 2014, Nichols passed away from a heart attack in his Manhattan apartment. On February 22, 2015, at the 87th Academy Awards, Nichols served as the anchor for the In Memoriam segment. “Horse with Groom,” a picture by John Frederick Herring Sr., was given to Nichols’ son Max.

Many famous people, including Whoopi Goldberg, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, and Tom Stoppard, paid tribute to Nichols after his passing. A memorial service for Nichols was held on November 8, 2015, in New York’s IAC Building. Lorne Michaels and Elaine May served as the event’s hosts. John Cleese and Eric Idle both performed.

Daisy Nichols, the daughter of the couple, was born. Max and Jenny Nichols were born as a result of his third marriage, which he entered into with Annabel Davis-Goff in 1975; the marriage terminated in divorce in 1986.

His fourth marriage took place on April 29, 1988, to Diane Sawyer, a former anchor for ABC World News and Good Morning America. Despite the fact that none of his spouses were Jewish and that they were not raised religiously, his offspring identify as Jews.

Nichols first made eye contact with Elaine May while they were both watching him perform as the lead in a Chicago production of Miss Julie from the front row. A few weeks later, he encountered her in a train station. He struck up a discussion with her while posing as a spy, and she joined in by using a different accent. Nichols moved to New York City from Chicago in 1953 to study method acting with Lee Strasberg, but he was unable to find theatre work there.
