WXEX-TV (1972–1977)

Smith began her broadcasting career in 1972 at Richmond, Virginia’s ABC affiliate WXEX, Channel 8. She hosted and produced a daily one-hour chat program and headlined the 6 p.m. weekday newscasts, making her the first female anchor in the state.

WEWS-TV (1977–1994)

Her Cleveland broadcasting career began on July 17, 1977, when she joined ABC station WEWS, Channel 5, as co-host of Afternoon Exchange, an early evening news/interview program.

Beginning in 1982, she co-hosted the news show Live On 5, and the following year, she began co-anchoring the 11 p.m. newscast alongside longtime anchor Ted Henry. In December 1993, she made her final on-air appearance at the station.

WJW-TV (1994–2013)

Smith joined Cleveland’s WJW, Channel 8, in 1994 after finishing a contractual no-compete period. The change occurred as the station transitioned from being a CBS affiliate to a Fox affiliate. Smith co-anchored the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts from 1995 until 2005.
