Hyman published two books, My Mother’s Keeper (1985) and Narrow Is the Way (1987), both of which were harshly critical of her mother. Hyman received a lot of criticism for the timing of the publication of My Mother’s Keeper because Davis was ill after having a stroke while the book was being published, despite the fact that the writing of the book had been finished long before the stroke. In the book My Mother’s Keeper, the author chronicled her difficult mother-daughter relationship and showed scenes of her controlling alcoholic mother.

Hyman praised Davis for her parenting abilities when she (Hyman) was younger and stated that she had adopted many of Davis’s principles in raising her own children in a 60 Minutes interview that Mike Wallace rebroadcast a few years prior. The second book, however, did not arouse the same level of interest as My Mother’s Keeper did.

Even though they had a contentious divorce years earlier, Davis’s ex-husband Gary Merrill defended Davis and said in a CNN interview that B. D. was driven by “cruelty and greed”. Michael Merrill, B. Instead of dividing her estate between her adopted son Michael Merrill and her personal assistant Kathryn Sermak, Bette Davis disinherited B. D. and her grandchildren.
