Rick James’s Professional Life.

He escaped to Toronto in 1965, where he became friends with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, two local musicians at the time. James used the alias “Ricky James Matthews” to avoid being discovered by military authorities. James formed the Mynah Birds in the same year, a band that fused soul, folk, and rock music.

In 1965, the band recorded for Columbia Records’ Canadian division and released the song “Mynah Bird Hop”/”Mynah Bird Song.” Nick St. Nicholas, later of Steppenwolf fame, was a member at one point, but by the time “Mynah Bird Hop” was recorded, bassist Bruce Palmer had replaced him. To establish a new Mynah Birds band, James and Palmer enlisted guitarists Tom Morgan and Xavier Taylor, as well as drummer Rick Mason, and headed to Detroit to record with Motown.

Morgan departed the group before they began recording their first tracks for the label, dissatisfied with the label’s approach toward the musicians. He was eventually replaced by Neil Young. James met his musical heroes, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, while in Detroit. When Wonder met him and gave him his name, he thought “Ricky James Matthews” was “too long,” so he urged James to abbreviate it to “Ricky James.”

In 1966, Motown learned of James’s fugitive status with the Navy during a financial dispute in Toronto between James and the Mynah Birds’ handler, Morley Shelman. Motown executives told Rick they would not be releasing any more of his material and “convinced” him to come back and work with them after resolving his legal difficulties, hoping to avoid any federal attention.

James escaped from the Brooklyn Naval Brig after only six weeks, but after six months on the run, he surrendered and, with the help of his mother, found legal help from his cousin, Congressman Louis Stokes, and an attorney, former Marine Captain John Bracken, who reduced James’ second court-martial from a potential five years of hard labor to five months.

After being released from Portsmouth Naval Prison in August 1967, James went to Toronto and was arrested again, delaying the continuation of his career with Mynah Bird bandmate Neil Merryweather, with whom he would subsequently work at Motown and in Los Angeles.
