Robert J. O’Neill, who was a former United States Navy SEAL and currently contributes to TV news, was born on April 10, 1976. O’Neill caused a stir after joining SEAL Team Six for Operation Neptune Spear in May 2011 by claiming to be the only person to kill Osama bin Laden.

O’Neill claimed that he had killed Osama bin Laden during Operation Neptune Spear in an anonymous interview with Esquire in February 2013. O’Neill’s name was leaked in late 2014 by other former special forces members who were protesting his violation of “a code of silence that forbids them from publicly taking credit for their actions.” This was in the lead-up to credited Fox News and Washington Post stories on the same topic. O’Neill asserted that he and a second unnamed SEAL Team Six member had cornered bin Laden; after the other SEAL had fired and missed, O’Neill had shot the terrorist leader in the head to death.
In No Easy Day, fellow SEAL Matt Bissonnette asserts that the unnamed point man actually fired the fatal shots. In an interview with a former member of SEAL Team 6, The Intercept reported that when O’Neill arrived at the terrorist leader, bin Laden was “bleeding out on the floor, possibly already dead, after being shot in the chest and leg by the lead assaulter on the raid.” Another SEAL claimed that O’Neill simply approached the motionless al-Qaeda leader and shot him twice in the head.
The U.S. government had neither confirmed nor denied O’Neill’s allegations as of August 2020, but Rear Admiral Brian L. Losey and Force Master Chief Michael Magaraci did urge all SEALs to uphold their code of silence.
