Radio

Walker began his professional radio career as an intern at Sheffield’s Hallam FM. After winning a competition for young sports commentators, he earned work experience. Walker began a full-time career as a sports broadcaster and analyst for Manchester’s Key 103 radio station in 1999. He hosted the regular midweek sports show (often broadcasting from UEFA Champions League events at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium) and also served as the resident sports correspondent for Mike Toolan’s breakfast show throughout his stint at the station.

Walker began his career in television with a six-month stint with Granada Television in Manchester, where he worked as a commentator on the Football League Review show before joining the BBC regional news show North West Tonight. He was nominated for a number of awards during this time, and in 2005, he received the Royal Television Society Sports Award for Regional Sports Presenter of the Year. Because he was covering the Champions League final in Istanbul, he was unable to attend the ceremony.

Walker met Tony Foulds by chance in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield, in January 2019, where Foulds was voluntarily maintaining the “Mi Amigo” memorial. In February 1944, Foulds, then eight years old, was in Endcliffe Park when a USAAC Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber crashed, killing all ten men on board. The pilot allegedly attempted to avoid Foulds and his companions. Following the meeting, Walker launched a social media effort to schedule a flyover at the park. The effort was successful, and the flypast took place on the 75th anniversary of the disaster on February 22, 2019. The flypast was broadcast nationally, and hundreds of people watched it, including the families of the ten airmen killed in the disaster.
