Mariss Jansons’ Biography

Mariss Jansons was a Latvian conductor best renowned for his renditions of Mahler, Strauss, and Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. He was frequently acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest conductors during his lifetime; in a 2015 Bachtrack poll, music critics named him the world’s third-best living conductor. Jansons served as music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) from 2003 to 2019 and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (ROC) from 2004 to 2015.

Jansons had two marriages. Ilona, his daughter with his first wife, Ira, became a pianist at the Mariinsky Theatre. During his time in Oslo, his marriage ended. Jansons and his second wife, former speech therapist Irina (née Outchitel), had a residence in Saint Petersburg where Jansons maintained his score collection. He was a dual citizen of Latvia and Russia.

Jansons, who lived at the Tolstoy House in Saint Petersburg, died on the night of November 30th / December 1st, 2019, at the age of 76, as a result of a long-standing cardiac problem.

Mariss Jansons Musical Career

Jansons became Associate Conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1973. He was named Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic in 1979, and he performed, recorded, and toured extensively with the orchestra. After a conflict with the city about the acoustics of the Oslo Concert Hall, Jansons resigned from his position in Oslo in 2000.

Jansons became the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor in 1992. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra as a guest conductor and recorded Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 with them on the LSO Live album.
