At the age of 25, Jakes was appointed pastor of the ten-member Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith, a storefront church in Smithers, West Virginia.He joined the Bishop Sherman Watkins-founded Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies in 1988.When Jakes relocated to South Charleston, West Virginia, in 1990, his congregation once more increased, reaching 300 people. He relocated to Cross Lanes, West Virginia, in 1993.
