After taking a year off, he was accepted to Los Angeles Pacific College of the Free Methodist Church in 1960. He received a Masters of Divinity degree with honors in 1963 from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles’ brand-new Talbot Theological Seminary in La Mirada, California. Talbot Theological Seminary and Grace Graduate School both awarded MacArthur honorary degrees.

MacArthur, who favors expository preaching has been named one of history’s most important preachers by Christianity Today. More than 150 books have been authored or edited by MacArthur. More than a million copies of his MacArthur Study Bible have been sold, and it won the Gold Medallion Book Award.
On June 5, 2011, MacArthur completed one of his own life goals preaching through the entire New Testament nearly 43 years after first entering the pulpit of Grace Community.
