He started working for publications like The Hartford Times and the Baltimore Evening Sun as soon as he graduated from college. He was employed by United Press International as well. He worked for Richard Pollack and Jack Anderson as columnists in the early 1970s. The Nixon administration put his family under surveillance as a result of some of his reporting. Later, the documents and surveillance footage were made public. He was hired by ABC News in 1973, and three years later he was promoted to correspondent. In 1989, he was named the White House correspondent for ABC. In 1997, he was appointed managing editor of Fox News’ Washington news. When Fox decided to delay the launch of his news program, he was one of the first reporters to cover the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
