He acquired all of the woodwind instrument skills as a member of the school orchestra and marching band, though the clarinet remained his main instrument. He studied mechanical engineering while working for the Reed Roller Bit Company in Houston, Texas, after finishing high school.
The United States Marine Corps then helped Swindoll complete his required military service, first in San Francisco and then on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Participating in the Marine Corps Marching Band was one of his duties.
He attended Dallas Theological Seminary following his honorable discharge in 1959, where he earned a four-year magna cum laude degree later.

After receiving his ordination in 1963, Swindoll spent two years working under J. Dwight Pentecost in Dallas. Since then, he has served as senior pastor in Fullerton, California, Irving, Texas, and Waltham, Massachusetts. In 1998, he began serving as senior pastor in Frisco, Texas.
Swindoll founded Insight for Living, which broadcasts the same radio show on both Christian and secular radio stations worldwide. The program is broadcast online and heard on more than 2000 stations. It is also available in multiple languages. Its beginnings can be traced to the summer of 1977, when radio stations began airing sermons by Swindoll from the First Evangelical Free Church in Fullerton.The Insight for Living radio ministry started in 1979, and today its headquarters are in Frisco.

Swindoll took over as the president of Dallas Theological Seminary in July 1994, and he currently holds the position of chancellor. He has written more than 70 books, the majority of which were inspired by his study and planning for his weekly sermons. Swindoll was listed in an article published by Christianity Today in honor of its 50th anniversary as one of the top 25 preachers of the previous 50 years.

Swindoll established Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco in 1998. Dallas Theological Seminary alumni make up a large portion of the Stonebriar pastorate.
After holding services at Collin County Community College, the church relocated to its current location on Legendary Drive. A significant expansion of the current facility was required due to the congregation’s rapid growth in the first few years, going from a few hundred to several thousand members.
The additions’ construction got under way in 2005. The church is renowned for its overseas missionary efforts, particularly in India. The Stonebriar Community Church is not connected to any specific denomination, despite the fact that Swindoll is still widely regarded as an Evangelical Free Church of America preacher.
